Endothelins in Health and Disease of Articular Cartilage - From Mechanism Towards Theraputics 

Funded by PROCORE-France/Hong Kong Joint Research Scheme, Research Grants Council  

Endothelins are vasoconstricting peptides, which play an essential role in vascular homeostasis (e.g. blood pressure). Hypertension is believed that it has high correlation with Osteoarthritis. This Project studies the effects of Endothelins on articular cartilage from its structures to its applications.

A Machine-Learning-Based Patient-Specific Predictor Model for Knee Osteoarthritis 

Funded by Departmental General Research Fund, PolyU (UGC) 

Machine-Learning is one of the biggest trends over the world. A reliable predictor of OA must be beneficial to all people. This project aims to build up a machine-learning model to predict the speed of progression of Knee Osteoarthritis accurately.

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors in Osteoarthritis and Its Cerebrovascular Comorbidities: A Preclinical Efficacy Study 

Funded by Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF), Food and Health Bureau 

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors (AChEI) inhibit the work of ACh enzyme (break down acetylcholine). Acting on parasympathetic nervous system, AChEI may cause hypotension which could be a potential cause of OA. This project finds more evidences to prove the relationship between AChEI and OA before starting the clinical efficacy study.

Photoacoustic Molecular Imaging of Osteoarthritic Pain - A Proof-of-Concept Study

Funded by HMRF Research Fellowship Scheme, Food and Health Bureau 

Osteoarthritic Pain sometimes may not be reflected on general body image. Photoacoustic Molecular Imaging, one of the best molecular imaging methods, can perform high spatial resolution and deep penetration depth. The project aims to examine the possibility of observe the OA pain via Photoacoustic Molecular Imaging.

Definition of OA

Osteoarthritis is a disorder involving movable joints characterized by cell stress and extracellular matrix degradation initiated by micro- and macro-injury that activates maladaptive repair responses including pro-inflammatory pathways of innate immunity. The disease manifests first as a molecular derangement (abnormal joint tissue metabolism) followed by anatomic, and/or physiologic derangements (characterized by cartilage degradation, bone remodeling, osteophyte formation, joint inflammation and loss of normal joint function), that can culminate in illness.
